Sajjad Shaukat was brought up in Lahore (Pakistan). He got Master’s Degrees in Journalism and English Literature, and Diploma in English Learning and Teaching from the Punjab University. He studied International Relations and current affairs in detail at the Journalism Department. Since then, he has been in touch with the subject. He wrote a numberof articles on international affairs published in English newspapers and magazines. This book authored by Sajjad Shaukat affords and encompasses depths and details of times amidst a volcanic flow of the most dramatic and unbelievable events that began with the September 11 catastrophe. The book introduces and applies the new theory of “Invisible Balance of Power” to an interaction between the “group terrorism” and “state terrorism”led by the Al Queda-related Islamic militants and the US respectively. It draws attention towards the fact that despite their weak position, theIslamic radicals have counterbalanced the most powerful state on the earth in a different style – by posing a check to the United States. While judging in this sense, disparity between both the adversaries does not matter so much as ground realities have shown the power of the sub-national combatants to be equal to that of Washington though in a quite different and an odd way. The book aptly and logically condemns the “role of force” and “power” in world affairs as well as between the developed and the undeveloped nations. It points out a reality that is in accordance with the “Balance of Power” school of thought. The new Idea of “Invisible Balance of Power” combined with “Invisible Deterrence” gives a clear lesson to the realists and neo-realists who could give up “power factor”.In a unique and interesting style, the book reveals injustices in the world that take origin from the privileged and the unprivileged status quo– the root cause of present conflict between the Muslim revolutionaries and the US. Insisting upon the growing importance of non-state actors, the book emphasizes upon the international community to consider the liberal views of idealism as an alternative paradigm for world peace. Note: Central thesis of the book remains valid and author’s future assessments proved true.
